17th
Century Gold Posy Ring

treasure - a late 17th century Gold Posy Ring with a charming
inscription within:
"Our Hands and Hearts with one

Extremely wearable.
It is made of high carat yellow gold.
Size: 8; US; Q UK.
Weight: 13.1 gm.
(over one third of a troy ounce)
The English Posy Ring was the most common type of Love Ring in use
since the Middle Ages and was the forerunner of our present Wedding
Ring, which the later 17th century Posy Rings strongly resemble.
The ring derives its name from the word "posy" or "Poesy" - a
derivative of poetry - and meaning short rhyme.
Very popular in the English Medieval Period, Posy Rings reached
their zenith in the 16th and 17th centuries. The earlier examples of
the 14th and 15th centuries were generally engraved on the outside,
usually accompanied by decorative and colourful enamelling, the
language used being medieval French in the most part. The lettering
was of a style known as "black letter" Gothic.
Later the rings became plainer, many of them being plain hoops of
gold or silver. In these types the "posy" was engraved on the inside
and sometimes bearing a maker's mark.
Some of the "posies" were often composed by the engravers
themselves; others by the bequethers. Inevitably, there were a fair
number of standard inscriptions which were used repeatedly.
The Posy ring has now become highly sought after not just as a
highly collectable item but also as a very wearable piece of
jewellery.
